Governor Rick Perry has been getting flack lately for having the temerity to point out that some states have high taxes and onerous regulatory environments, especially when compared to Texas. Officials in those states are crying “foul”, as though this is somehow unusual or unfair.
From Tim Pawlenty to Jesse Ventura to Mark Dayton, every governor of Minnesota has seen it as part of his job to promote Minnesota. Governors promote our quality of life, education system, and our work ethic. They try to talk business leaders into locating or expanding here in Minnesota.
Competition is natural, constant, and beneficial. Businesses are not stupid. They pay attention to differences in the business climates between states. They can see the statistics just like I can. (see rankings here) Rick Perry is not telling anyone anything they don’t already know. Besides, if Mark Dayton is right, businesses should shun Texas because low taxes are associated with poverty and crime.
Rick Perry is doing his job. It’s called competition. Companies can vote with their feet. Mark Dayton should make his case, too. May the best state win.
