As usual, Charles Krauthammer expresses clearly what I struggle to describe.
The progression from disapproval, to condemnation, to censorship to totalitarian suppression is a familiar pattern in history. This is not a unique failure found only in especially bad people. Moral failure is part of being human, and the totalitarian urge is one of our many ways to go wrong. It is a theme throughout history. We demonstrate the failing when we claim it does not apply to us.
