Tuesday night, Steve Waters and I visited a number of the “National Night Out” local gatherings in Inver Grove Heights. This was a great opportunity to meet voters, and listen to their concerns. I had good conversation with parents of young children who lived near the IGH Target store. They have been pushing for a park in their neighborhood for their children, and commented to me that the Target nearby was often empty. I pointed out that as a state legislator, it would not be my place to decide where parks are located. That is a city function, and should remain so. I also pointed out that the money to build a park may well have gone into incentives to get Target to locate their store in IGH. They seemed to understand. Nothing is free, and bribing companies to do business is often a losing proposition for taxpayers. It was a great night. I got a warm welcome from almost everyone I talked to. People seem to agree that we are going in the wrong direction and it’s time for a change.
