BLOG: Opportunity Seized

In his “state of the state” address last week, Governor Dayton said something I wholeheartely support.

He proposed an “un-session”.  He suggested that we should have an entire session focused on un-doing laws, programs and state machinery.  This is a wonderful idea, and I enthusiastically endorse it.

As I have said many times, the Rule of Law and the consent of the governed are the most precious things we have as a nation.  Unlike other nations, we are bound together solely by our loyalty to our law, and to our constitution.  There is no single ethnic or cultural root of the United States.

This means that our faith in the law is more important than most nations, because if we lose that faith, the core of our nation is at risk.

Winston Churchill once said:

If you have 10,000 regulations, you destroy all respect for the law.

That’s where we stand today.

Anything we can do to chip away at the literally hundreds of commissions, and regulatory boards, and rules and regulations, blue laws and ancient legal flotsam in our laws is a step back toward the Rule of Law.

Let’s do it.
