The Boy Scouts, whether they know it or not, is an organization that has recently abandoned the very idea that they stand up for principles and ideals by allowing scouts to select which standards they will uphold. The Scouts have stood for manhood as understood in the traditional way, and virtue as based on Judeo-Christian faith. The Scouts went all the way to the Supreme Court to defend their right to choose their members. After having won those battles, they voted to capitulateanyway.
Anthony Esolen says it better in this article.
Whatever you may think of those standards, the Boy Scouts is a private organization, and has a right to choose its members, just as does MENSA, the Jesuits, or the Ku Klux Clan. The principle of freedom of association is vital.
